So, we've been having this discussion for decades about some English. Which one of the two is correct?

There were an unbelievable amount of presents dropped.
There was an unbelievable amount of presents dropped.

I'd say the second sentence is correct, because the "an unbelievable amount of presents" is the subject. An amount is singular so it's got to be was, but some people disagree.

What do you think is correct and please tell us why?

That's right.
As I have said before it is "was" Smile
"An unbelievable amount of presents dropped."
Problem avoided, you can thank me later.. (screw auxiliaries!)

(It actually is "were", like in "There were "many"/"an unbelievable amount of" presents dropped", since "an amount of" is quite synonymous to "many".)
I think you will find it is actually "was"
I think you will find it is actually "were"
"was" >Sad Perception you had a good try there, a truly heroic attempt but I am afraid you are wrong.
"There was an amount dropped."

"There was an unbelievable amount of presents dropped."
"were" , there should be a voting poll on this
"were"
