You mean the sort of spade shaped part between the boots and the upper leg part?
That's a plate supposed to cover the joint of both the armor pieces from the side. It's big like that because it covers a spot where there's no armor behind because of added flexibility.

Might look a little weird but I guess people at that time preferred it looking out of place over getting stabbed in the knee from the side. It's not a part of the body that heals easily when being damaged.
