As I remember one of goals of implementing new building system was freeing fourth slot for weapons.

Was this idea abandoned?

Because it would be very convenient feature.

It's hasn't been abandoned. We just need to make sure all support items follow the same system as the barricades/medic boxes do now. Something which we are working on currently
