A lot of people have had stupid amounts before upgrades came. 

This was when gold was less wanted as it had no real use other than heroes and craftables.

Nope. I converted 86467180 in December on my Warden after not having played since last April.

And that was just the Warden. Also had 55 million on MP and Repeaterman that day.
