the rng may include groupings of drops to increase the variation. nothing has changed, you're just going crazy is all.

The previous day I had gotten 1 lump and 7 hardened metal in a full day (~12 hours) of playing. I don't suppose the drop rate changed then as well?

I swear to you, one day the drop rates need to get a 50% increase when people are already happy with loots and we'll see if anyone notices.
I suppose the best thing I can say is that I played this game for many years and was completely in charge of drop rates for a fairly long time. I have experienced a lot of periods in which no change occurred, yet people claimed to have noticed one. I have seen many cases in which many drop rates changed significantly and no one noticed. It isn't uncommon. However, it is uncommon for a conversation like this to go on past the "No, drop rates actually haven't changed" phase.
