I think it got nerfed down from 40 blunt. Check its in game stats, those are correct.

Indeed, originally it had 40 blunt damage, but no knockdown (and shorter range). Then it was requested that it got knockdown at the cost of some damage, so at Worm's behest it was changed to 30 blunt + knockdown. Now it has 31 blunt and knockdown, and it's longer than it used to be (the most balanced approach in my opinion).
Oh yeah and before that it was a pony.

At least you can still use it, unlike the pony. If you are a sniper, it's a pretty handy one-hander. And besides, it is on FIRE.
