I don't think pressing the 5 key by default pops up a menu. If you want to set it to anything other then 5, just redefine the key in the options.

May I ask what key order 1 is set to in your game settings?(1 by default). Already had a few complaints coming from people with the same problem.

"1" is the first weapon slot for me. But to be honest it's not that big of an issue. I can just sheathe my current weapon and use the mouse scroll up (next weapon for me) to select my primary weapon. But the "Group 5" key bind you mentioned sounds like a better idea, yes.

That's what I am trying to do with the group 1 key bind. X is secondary mode for weapons by default
Seems like I only have non-bastard-weapons/weapons with no secondary mode...
