Steam Scam/Virus - Mimer - 08-11-2014

Don't click on any links people might send you atm. Half of Steam has been infected. Link is mostly called "screen_lighting". It is a virus/Scam

I already got asked by 50% of my steam mates

This is what the virus says

Yah, I got it from one as well today. Guess I'm lucky it was only 1?

Re: Steam Scam/Virus - Oromë - 08-11-2014

I'm gonna try clicking this link on my second  steam account. Lets see what will happen.

You copier Smile
But yes, I got friends that can confirm that it is a Trojan Horse
that take over your Steam to get it shared.

PS Maroon you shared the virus to several as well.
You might need to check your pc Wink

Oromë, pressing on it has no effect (since I did it as
well before I knew about it). But do not open it. It is a Trojan Horse.

I guess I lost my Dino d-day copy. I cannot login now.

Re: Steam Scam/Virus - -Perception- - 08-11-2014

Yup, had quite a few people sending me a link to this funny little trojan as well.

Seriously though, if you use a bit of common sense you should be safe from all kinds of malware working like this one.
Basically, you have to click on a link which comes along with some rather odd text. Then you also have to click download on a panel opening itself from a link that should redirect to a picture, but instead it gives you this download of a .src file, hardly suspicious. But even if youve gone that far, you still need to execute the file for the virus to take effect.. It couldnt be much more obvious imo.

To Orome, it does not only affect your steam account, so dont use that file (unless youre running it sandboxed to check what happens).

And to all those for whom this warning came too late, a full reset of your PC is probably the best and safest way to avoid any further problems caused by this.

Re: Steam Scam/Virus - Maroon - 08-11-2014

Heh, it's a bit hard to miss the 300 messages the virus sent through my steam. From what I can tell, it's not much more than a troll trojan, sending itself to everyone on your friendslist. I haven't had any other effects yet, aside from making myself look like an idiot. Tongue

Re: Steam Scam/Virus - BlackSniper - 08-11-2014

This virus doesn't attack Steam only.
It uses Steam to get to other pc's.

If you download it AND open it,
you will get a Trojan Horse.

It has access to all your files.
All registered accounts are visible now.
Email, bank, forums etc. No account is safe.

Make sure you use alot of virus scanners and
mayby reinstall your pc. Open it and you have big trouble.

PS Maroon it can also see your accounts. Be aware!
Why should it only share itself if it doesn't do any "visible" effect.

Re: Steam Scam/Virus - Oromë - 08-11-2014

I'm just watching what that virus will do to Linux.

If you have a source for this, please share it, because now you're sounding like a 12 year old who just had his first lesson in internet safety. A trojan horse could potentially access files on my pc, but that does not mean this particular trojan can.
