I think we should be able to convert the base types of xp into the others, as this would be really useful for people just trying to specialise in one class. It should probably be at a lower rate than assist xp though

ithink tthat would be fail because from fighting in melee you dont learn anything about ranged

I don't think theres likely to be conversion of xp between the types other than assist xp, and this is simply because then the different types of xp become fairly meaningless if its easy to switch between them (even with a penalty for doing so)

assist xp seems good enough, just hide behind someone with a big shield while they get all the kills = instant leveling and free xp
