It takes 3 chains to make a chain link, this is a fair trade as it is. Otherwise you would have to pay a house to craft your 3 chains into a chain link. The reason you see chains so expensive on the AH is because no one is paying those prices. The ones put up at a reasonable price are the ones being bought.
