Welcome to the world of Dwarf Fortress. For the past week or so I have been playing Dwarf Fortress again, and as in customary in my culture, I have named each one of the dwarves in my fortress after someone I know.
Those people I know, are you guys. Even if I don't know you.
Some of you may have seen how I ask for names for your children, that's because the dwarf I named after you either gave birth to a child, or your wife did. To start off, I should explain some things:
- I don't check genders before I assign names.
- I assign names based on how I view you. If you are friends or of similar nature I will assign you as husband and wife.
- There is a severe lack of women in this community, so most of you are women in the fortress.
- I will keep a record of everyone I add here, on this post so that you can see who you are related to, what children, if any you have, your relationships with other members of the fortress, and what you do.
Lastly, when you have a child, I will require you to name it, because that child is yours to control (in some sense). They will get the profession of your choice, name of your choice, and if conscripted what type of soldier they will be.
- Carpenter Cuts down trees and makes the wood into things like beds, cabinets, and more. Very important in low quantities.
- Crafter Does all of the crafts for the fortress, the main creator of wealth for trading to the Humans, Elves, and Dwarves. Also can make some bolts and bone/shell armor. Along with spinning silk and making clothing.
- Doctor Healers of the fortress, when the militia gets hurt in combat, these are the dwarves responsible for fixing them. Along with any sickness that spreads or any other sort of medical injuries such as horrible, HORRIBLE bee stings.
- Engineer Responsible for creating mechanisms, traps, and running siege engines such as ballista.
- Farmer Responsible for planting crops, brewing alcohol, cooking food, and anything else you would expect a farmer to do.
- Fisher In charge of fishing to gain food, and cleaning said fish for better eats.
- Hunter Exactly the same as a woodsman, but when they have bolts, they will hunt animals.
- Mason One of the most important, if not the most important professions. Creates furniture out of stone, including doors, tables, chairs, coffins and more. Also creates bridges and smooths stone for engraving.
- Miner Digs. Digs. DIGS. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytWz0qVvBZ0
- Smelter Not entirely useful unless I start actually using the lava pool I found. Which I will eventually. Crafts things from metal, such as bars, weapons, and armor.
- Woodsman Butchers animals, trains animals, and pretty much anything to do with animals. Tans skins and does Leatherworking.
- Wrestler Fights with hands. Often nimble and destructive when trained.
- Axedwarf Fights with an axe, great for chopping off limbs, bad against undead.
- Swordsdwarf Fights with a sword, great for chopping off limbs, not good against undead.
- Speardwarf Stabs things, good for hitting vital organs, horrible against undead.
- Hammerdwarf Smashes things, good for crushing limbs, great against undead.
- Macedwarf A bit like a smaller hammerdwarf, good against undead.
- Marksdwarf Uses crossbows to kill at range, horrible against undead.
