Wow that is a lot of "unused" crates. Do you think they would be much more useful if they were buffed to the point that they could be used for different camping spots, without the need for map crates?

It's a good thing they're unused. You need them for healing Thor's PBAE and surrounding and killing Odin. I'm also guessing you didn't really look at the screenshots, since it's clearly the fountain on King's Castleyard, where there is no "map crate" (hence the reason to bring in Big Ammo Crate in the first place...).
