As western military class crossbows reached thier zenneth the "Albarest"or siege crossbow was drawn by a gear and handle assembly attached to the bowman's belt.The bolt,made of wood with a hardened iron head,would penetrate heavy plate armor far beyond the range of the best bows or guns of the time.
