I was wondering if anyone had advice for leveling blacksmithing up from lvl 6 without making myself bankrupt? seems very little other than steel sells right now and coal costs a fortune and never seems to drop for me.

As I say, 6 - 12 is overkill, it's very expensive to level. Your best bet is just to slog it out and gather most of the materials in-game yourself.

When you hit 8 you can atleast make Black Steel, so keep any steel you make, because it ends up being your main craft until level 12 Then you can use Hard mode materials so it goes pretty quick.

Buy coal + metal/bent swords. Coal = 5k, metal = 1k, bent swords = 500g so 1.5k.

Steel costs 1 coal 3 metal, so you would lose 5 + 1 + 1 +1 = 8k or 5 + 1.5 + 1.5 + 1.5 = 10.5k making it.

Steel goes for 10k so you would either win or lose little money.

This calculation uses quite high prices, so if you watch the AH carefully and buy cheap mats you'll make quite some profit, and still level up.

Bent Swords are 350 g... (when you buy mine  ;D)
