It's new "awesome" animation, actually horrible.

A bit rusty? This is actually what the up attack from the historical manuscripts looks like and what is practiced today. Swinging it all the way behind your head takes too much effort and is way too dangerous for your environment, a short powerful stroke is all you need. I always thought it was way too silly and this one looks better.
