In my opinion: the Frying Pan. It's quick, it's got blunt damage and it looks hot.

Please, stay on topic.

The claymore works pretty well for heavy inf + sniper, but the strange sword is a good alternative and is faster as well IIRC.

Seriously, the torch is an awesome archer side weapon. You can hurt hardmode mobs, and the knockdown ability can save your life. Plus, it looks cool.

Since nobody has answered his Q in his OP here are my opinions. I don't play my archer as much as others so I have a limited knowledge on the melee weapons they can use but this is as best as I can think of atm.

You can find most of your usable weapons in the market place and the weapon choice for melee weapons isn't as large as others until you become a infantry/heavy
