Revert Animation Changes
#1
Hello fellow players, admins, and devs,

I know you devs have been flooded with feature requests as of lately, but I feel this has to be requested.
The thing that troubles me, as the title of this thread states, are the new(ish) animations. I'll list all the animations that were changed, and I'll also state what (in my opinion) is good and bad about them.
  • One Handed stab
This animation was changed from the original stab from the side of the body, to a stab from somewhere behind your back. This new animation has multiple issues, but first the goods:
    • [li]Minimum range is shorter; so there's far less bumps when you stab someone close to you
    • The stab gets to it's maximum speed faster, which means more damage

There are, however, some issues with this animation:
    • The animation takes about 1.5-2 seconds to complete, of which only the first 0.5 seconds is useful, the rest is retracting the weapon
    • One-handed polearm attacks (polearm+shield) are nearly useless, because the range of the stab is unpredictable, and bumps very quickly with a spear (not with a sword though)
    • The animation is hard to control, leading to mostly stabs in the abdomen of your opponent, instead of, for example, headstabs
    • The animation seems to reach further than the actual sword, leading to a ghost reach
    [/li]
I feel a lot of these problems are fixed with the default animation, and it renders the spear/shield combo far more useful than the one we use now.
  • Two Handed overhead slash
    Again, starting with the goods:
    • [li]The animation doesn't hit anyone behind you, which is perfect for slashers

I'm afraid I have to say that's all the pros I could think of to this animation. As for the bads:
    • The weapon moves illogically slow, to such a point you'd think your enemy would rather brush his head where your blade somewhat touched him, instead laying on the ground with a splitted skull (pardon my strong words)
    • Whenever you try to hit someone of your own team (for example, you see someone blocking up, and you overhead at him), your weapon seems to somehow go right through him, unless you're really close to him
    • The animation bugs when used by a fast blade, like Prince's
    [/li]

And the last added animation:
  • Firing a bow
I kinda promised I'd put down all new animations, so that's why this one's in here, but this animation is rather fine, imo, even better than the original one.

So, all those lists done, I hope the devs will reconsider these animations, because I'm sure I'm not the only one having problems with these animations. [sup][1][/sup]

Thanks for listening to my long rant,
Maroon

Yes I have the same problem, when I hit one enemy in front and behind an ally and I give him the shot

There is a different animation with spear + shield in the Rome at War Warband mod, you hold the spear near your shoulder (it even looks like a kind of overhead thrust) I think it could be appropriate. I don't know if it can be used in NI too, I'll try to grab more information about it if interested.

The only thing that bothers me, is the stab. If I for example, has a spear in my hand, I barely see where to aim too. Head or genitals?  :Smile

This would be great. I'd finally have some reason to take a shield with a spear if this was in.

I understand the changes with the bow, to make it look better because most of the arrows are placed on the players ass, but i don't see any point changing the stabbing animation, just brought more cons than pros if you ask me. Considering the 2h and polearm animations, they're understandable since the best tactic is to have a shieldwall/slasher tactic, and its annoying as hell when you get hurt because a guy is behind you. If it was up to me i would change the stabbing animations.

Although I understand the old overhead swing animation was annoying when slashing, I myself prefer a version in which your swings actually seem to deal damage to your opponent over an animation in which your sword is more like blessing your enemy instead of hurting him.

As much as I don't want to disrupt the discussion, I would point out that the swing animation was developed to be historically accurate by Papa Lazarou, we included it for functional reasons.

Well, the overhead isn't my biggest problem, I dislike the stab more, but as far as I can see, I don't see how moving your sword that slow is accurate. I wouldn't really mind if that animation stayed in, but I myself would prefer to see the old animation.
Maybe I should add a poll Tongue
