So this somehow happened after selling the shield in the AH. I cannot sell it to the marketplace or remove it from my inventory in any way.
UPDATE: It seems I am able to equip the shield even though I no longer own it, effectively duplicating a single shield to be used on two players at once, but only actually owned by one person.
