Recently actually, the number of new players have gone up, not down. Updating the moddb page brought
Nearly 275~ downloads as of now, and therefore players, as of now.

Personally, though I don't oppose holding events, the best way to aid new players is to just play normal mode on public servers In my opinion, since even if they are told of events, many will not likely join. Staying on the normal servers where help can be given out the most will be of more aid from vets.
