only two logical choices are steel gauntlets or a 2handed sword.
only having a stone maul is not very good, although it is a very good weapon it doesn't max out your damage as it is a slow weapon. it's good on the heavier waves with shielded enemies but if you have a sword as well you can slash faster.
or get gauntlets for a cheaper fix to max out your armour.
