Alrighty, I'm gonna say something that I really don't mean, but it's nice to think about..
Back in the good ol' days (when people still fought with blade and bow) everyone could use every weapon, right? Hell, you could pick up a bow and nock an arrow, but more than likely you would be less efficient than one with training. It's the same for swords and maces and what have you (crossbows are different, because pressing a trigger requires no training). So I don't have a problem with archers using size appropriate swords (like a bastard sword), but I think a great maul or a polehammer would be a little over the top.
