For killing an enemy from range, you will get the drop chance, and anyone within your assist exp range will as well. The assist exp range is about the same range as a normal medic boxes range, if I recall correctly. Either that, or it was the surgeons kit range.

In short, whoever gets a kill is the locus of the assist range.
