That could be because he was moving and got some speed bonus damage from the barrel.
Not 100% sure if direction makes any difference: Say if he runs away from the barrel but still gets hit would do less than if he was running towards said barrel.
Seeing as the barrel damages an area and having the direction added into the equation would probably be unnecessary coding.

All that said, he was probably horsing around.
