As far as a texturing guide goes, not sure.
I'll have a look.
In the mean time, I suggest looking at existing model's textures.
Pay attention to the detail, like using lighter colours to mark out edges/worn areas. That kind of thing, also don't be afraid to play around with it/ make multiple textures.

Nothing is impossible, it's just a matter of determination and probability.
