If you have steam, Shift-Tabbing should work similarly.

That would open steam in-game and not bring me to my desktop. WIN + D works to get back to your desktop when in-game, however, 
D is used in the game which makes the combination WIN + D not work when being on a ni server by example.

Start the game in windowed mode, and use ALT-Enter to switch between full screen and windowed. In windowed you should be able to see your taskbar.
