Level gains

Wasn't sure exactly where or how to ask this question, but here it goes.  Does putting assist xp points into either medic/engineer contribute to level gaining? That is, If I go surgeon will I level up and gain class points?  Thanks for your time.

Assist classes do not count towards leveling up and class points.

Only ranged and melee xp count towards leveling up.
