True value is cost of mats that cannot be argued as that is what it costs to make. it is player base that has made this weapon go down in value and with christmas just past and the small influx of new players it brought when these new guys get to commando level you may just see the price rise again. another reason why values have dropped is because of the auction it has sucked a whole lot of cash out of the economy meaning no one has cash so arrnt willing to pay top price and are willing to sell for less to get cash.

now if we take those two points into consideration and the fact that no  one will be crafting it because high price for mats/low sale price. i very much doubt it will drop much lower and will in time only increase back up to its original cost in mats because it will rise in demand and materials will drop in price.

but all that said NOW is your best time to get a cheap one imo so GL

OH and EDIT: also mats are inflated atm because of anticipation of house crafting but mats and weapon will again meet

Hmm, did not consider the auction removing a lot of cash. But I think characteristically this does not reflect off of it. Especially since people aren't only looking for cash, but also materials or comparable items and very arguably, a lot more was added into the economy worth wise because many things were bought at a discount. While gold is at a premium, the relative value of items hasn't really shifted so I feel the economy would actually be more expansive. The new players argument is a good one though. But I think its becoming increasingly, Messer to Legendary, if they do do that jump.

But yes, supply will stop until people start crafting again, which might be a while. And with house crafting, you never know if Steel Cutter may just never become popular again.

Hmm other than ragnash saying on this post i dont know of anyone else that went from a messer to a legendary. as for house crafting that is going to be one up on the craftables already available.

so for me steel cutter, vengenace or for the best value steel sword but alot of players dont like stabbing weapons. then you have swadian hope or head crusher but they are double the price of veng and cutter so personally i think there will always be a place for the steel cutter.

I might be doing that if I ever get to the stage of buying legendaries. The incremental upgrade of the Steel Cutter is too small for me. Vengeance is pretty solid too, I like it more than the Steel Cutter with better(?) stats and it costs maybe a little bit more.
