To answer the question that you have asked here,  Last night at the last run in the VM Event I got top kills on my pikeman.  The run before, I was near the bottom with about 4 archers at the top of the kills.

Pikeman is a fantastic class, possibly the best and most versatile in game, being able to fill any role where applicable. With some of the newer slashing weapons and on a marauder you enjoy THE highest slashing DPS in comparison to the other slasher classes such as commando and Zweihander.

Perhaps their most powerful quality is their ridiculous ranged DPS, topping all the other ranged classes (crossbow and archer) at shield wall tactics and arguably kiting. To top it all off, their armour is more than what is needed for a class specialised in swift movement allowing them to tank and dodge bots with ease.

as has already been mentioned, the best or worst class comes down to personal preference and more importantly skill. For slashers, the classes of choice are zweihander and marauder. For large amounts of per shot damage, Crossbowman is the best. For high DPS, Archer and Skirmisher are the usual pick. As for last and requiring the least amount of skill and given the most recent bot damage changes, royal guard is perhaps the most useless of all classes being easily substituted for any of the other commandos heroes and a trip to the anvil at the end of each wave instead of every two or three. the only time the royal guards strength comes into play is when the the team lacks in slashing capabilities which in my opinion is more important than shield skill. (a team with capable slashers can keep a shield line of zweihanders shielding longer than a team of crappy or low number of slashers can a royal guard)

Not really, look at Banana on his Pavise, he does great at shielding. It isn't useless.
