Trying to but policing the idiocy that is creeping into this thread is both interrupting and annoying me.
Keep this on topic or I will close it. I have left it open so far as it does relate to an interesting and oft debated usage of a somewhat archaic english tense. There is great confusion over the usage and distinction of was/were and if but one member of this community learns more about the english language from this discussion then I feel it is not a waste of my time. Do not make me regret this.

Was. "Presents" is the object of the prepositional phrase of "of presents" and not the subject (which is the singular "amount").
Either way, grammatical rules state you use "number" instead of "amount" when it is not a single item, e.g. "a large number of presents" versus "a large amount of water."
