You can get all the info about the picture format here, for example: http://nordinvasion.com//item_images/ful..._staff.png
Best is to make the pictures in openBRF, make sure to have spec and normal maps enabled, same for transparency and basicly just all the other preview shaders.
If you need any help with this just PM me, thought about doing this too, but didnt really bother enough.
(Also, havent I read a while ago about fancy pictures for all the crafting mats?)
