East of Eden or Cannery Row come to mind. If you're interested in non-fiction Alexander of Macedon 356-323 B.C. and Alexander to Actium both by Green are two very no-nonsense portraits of an interesting time period. The History by Herodotus. If you're really feeling adventurous try Ramses II And His Time by Velikovsky.

To add something from me, I would recommed Terry Pratchet's series on the World of Disc. Fantastic humor and one can't stop reading... Gets you in a good mood, guaranteed.

I´m kind of a fantasy guy, favourite books are absolutely Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and, still my absolute favourite, Eragon written by Christopher Paolini. Can´t describe any of the feeling but this. Is just the best book. I´ve ever read.
Also, Twilight is such a good book (no, it´s not for women only lol), very well written you can imagine so good (sadly the movies are kind of crap).
But for all Fantasy fans like me, at least check out Eragon, give it a try and you will admire it!
