Let's not get too far with speculations...
Yes some people abused their private servers, but Devs also wanted to have full control of all the servers to update them all at the same time and also make maps downloadable when changed. No need to wait for a new patch or to contact ALL of the server owners to have a server updated or a map updated. See it as 2 hits 1 stone. Game Admins are admins everywhere now, not just on the "official" servers. Before, you could kick anyone you didn't like out of your server, making it really private, and not "public server owned privately". It's for the best that the Dev team control all the servers now, and the $30 you were paying per month for your server, well now you only have to pay $5 to keep the mod alive. If you really were doing it to "help", then you're still helping a lot and save $25 a month. You should be happy about it
