  A Community Outreach Message

Dear NI Community,

It is with regret that I am writing another of these messages. As I am sure you are all well aware, server hosting is not a cheap business and unfortunately the NI kitty is beginning to look a little bare once again. Earlier this year we increased our costs slightly to expand our US servers and this has placed a slightly greater financial burden on NI. It is however the unfortunate retirement of Ragnash that sees further strain put on the NI kitty. Ragnash not only carried out his duties as a senior admin but also was very kind in his donations every month to aid in the hosting of servers in Australia. At present we can afford to host NI until the beginning of March, failing any further donations throughout February. I am therefore asking our wonderful community to aid us in donations if they feel they would like to. As always there is absolutely no requirement to donate and you should feel no pressure to do so.

Again, I ask that no one posts about re-installing private servers; this will not happen. As stated when we shut down private servers, a section of the NI community proved that they could not be trusted and they have unfortunately soured the experience for the rest of the community. If you would like to assist us, please make donations directly to the NI paypal account.

We are working on a new patch just now and I am sure you have noticed updates in the web department of late. I can also divulge that a conversation was had regarding house campaigns and what our objectives are regarding it... We also have our massive item rebalance coming up, balancing of crafting recipes and the introduction of many new craftables including new horses. Cav mode will also be getting an overhaul XP and loot-wise, and there may even be a legendary lance on the way...

We continue to work hard and I have always said that I will endeavour to continue running NI as long as players still enjoy it. NI has outlasted all of our expectations and grown to be something much more than was ever envisioned. We have seen a surge of new players recently and I'm happy to announce that hundreds of players still play daily. Any assistance in supporting NI will be met with the greatest of gratitude.

Much love as always,

The NI Family

Happy New Year And 10 Fun Facts
Posted by: Naozumi - 31-12-2013, 06:57 PM - Forum: News & Updates - Replies (31)

Hi all. Happy New Year! To those already in it, hope its going well, and for those who it is yet to reach, get those drinks at the ready. In celebration of another awesome year, we have pulled together 10 fun facts to share.

Enjoy!

19.7 Million
The number of times you guys hit the web pages. Thats nearly 54,000 pages served up every day!

I ho! I ho! It's off to work we go
Crafting seems to be a big past time in NI. Infact, after Character it is the most visited page. Messages narrowly beats Auction Hall for third.

USA! USA!
USA takes the number one spot this year to narrowly beat out Germany as the biggest visitors to the site. UK, Australia and Poland fill the top five.

26,000
This is the number of characters you lot all created this year. An astonishing number that leaves us wondering where did you get all that spare time...

134,000
Money, Money, Money..... Money! You guys went crazy this year with trades, completing over 134,000 trades

200,000
Questing seems to be rather popular with over 200,000 completed.

Apple on top
Perhaps not a big surprise, Apple's iPhone, iPad and iPod took the top places in mobile devices. Google's Nexus 7 and Samsung's SII make up the rest of the top 5. Interestingly, Naozumi loves his Nexus 7...

IOS
Of course that means that IOS was the top mobile operating system followed by Android and Windows Phone as the top 3. Other interesting things here are the use of Firefox OS, and visits from rather more unconventional devices such as the PS Vita and Nintendo 3DS.

Hoarding
We all know that some people like to hoard out there. Theres even TV shows about it. You guys appear to love your Rough Cloths with a rather large amount being held up by players and houses. But we think its Yuri who really wins out for having over 100,000 Aketon. Oh and if you'd be just kind enough to swing by the officers over there on your way out... Thanks!

16,000
And saving the best for last (well, in my opinion anyway), you have successfully consumed in excess of 16,000 GB of network traffic on the main server alone. Congratulations! Remind us to avoid network traffic restrictions...

Well, hopefully you enjoyed these stats. Remember if you are kicking around that there are NI events ongoing over the new year here and we will see you in 2014!

Lots of love!

  Website Upgrade
Posted by: Naozumi - 30-12-2013, 08:40 PM - Forum: News & Updates - Replies (12)

Hi folks, as part of our continual upgrades to NordInvasion we pushed out some architecture changes that overhaull some of the core features of the web server. Whilst we have tested as much as possible it is more than likely that something has been missed. As such, we ask that you all report anything you see that seems untoward and bear with us on any issues discovered.

Thanks & lots of love,

/Nao & the NI Dev Team

Changelog:

  • Architecture Changes
  • Database stuff
  • Other changes that will not appear on the front of the site but lay foundations for further developments

  Client Release: 0.6.1 'Merry jõl-mas'
Posted by: Hypernoma - 20-12-2013, 12:34 AM - Forum: News & Updates - Replies (67)

Merry jõl-mas, merry christmas, happy holidays, happy hanukkah, merry yuletide and happy just-another-day to you scrooges,

We are absolutely delighted to jump on the christmas bandwagon and throw snow at things! While this patch is just a wee one, we have a few surprises thrown in and are paving the way for some radical overhauls (yes, including the loot system) so keep your eyes peeled for additions.

I am also delighted to introduce a special Christmas event! The Nordic army have stolen christmas presents from the villages they have raided along the way and it is up to the noble soldiers of the Swadian Army to reclaim them! Whoever has the most presents on the 31st of December will find a rather nice present to bring in the New Year...

I would like to take this opportunity to make a community wide address. I think in the spirit of festive cheer that is an appropriate to express my distaste at the turn the community has taken recently. NordInvasion used to have a community that I was immensely proud of; the support and friendship that was evidenced on our servers was something that made NordInvasion stand apart from the rest of the Warband community and from the gaming community in general. The behaviour that I see on some servers is disgusting and I am tired of all the reports I receive regarding the so-called "elite class" of NordInvasion. There is no elite class in this mod and anyone that would like to tell me otherwise will receive my own brand of festive cheer. In general, there is no such thing as a player who "does not deserve" the loot that they receive (cheating excepted) and despite what some would have you believe, our current loot system is random. As I have said, we are working on a new system and it is now in the testing phases. I remember when many of you first started playing NordInvasion and in general, I have enjoyed seeing you grow and progress throughout the mod. There are some players who have both disappointed and saddened me on how they have progressed throughout this mod. I will however not sit idly by and watch certain players make this mod unenjoyable for others to play. Rather than the negative air this paragraph has taken on, I would rather a positive message is taken from it. This community was once a friendly and supportive group and I believe if players stop and think before speaking and take a moment to remember how they started out in the mod, we can move forward and find the mod a more enjoyable place for everyone.

On to the updates;

  • Massive map updates ( Updated & Fixed almost every NI map)
  • Three new maps (One for "normal",one for Cav and one for future map releases) and two new deathmatch maps.
  • Snowing in Winter map ( Event Map )

  New US servers
Posted by: Hypernoma - 15-11-2013, 08:42 PM - Forum: News & Updates - Replies (13)

Good evening,

Yesterday we took the plunge and have ordered a new designated box in the US. This box hopefully means we can run a lot more servers in the US including new US event servers. The box is located in St Louis Missouri which is about as central as we could get at a fair price. We have an expanding US community so hopefully this will give our new players some more room to move about and I hope to see both our European and Oceanic community playing on there from time to time. This dedicated box will make it much easier for us to patch and to deal with any stability issues so hopefully all players should find the US servers more enjoyable to play on.

I would like to encourage players to play on the US servers for the next week or so and put them through their paces. We have faith in their stability but go blow some barrels for us and see what happens! The new servers are NI_Normal_US etc and the "old" US servers have been renamed to NI_Normal2_US etc.

As I am sure you will realise, the addition of another dedicated box and a massive increase in servers does come with a financial toll. I am, as always, incredibly grateful to our donators but if anyone is able to spare anything at all it will help us to continue to grow and cause me less stress!

  Client Release: 0.6.0 'Retaliation Mode!'
Posted by: Hypernoma - 23-10-2013, 06:02 PM - Forum: News & Updates - Replies (150)

Dear NI community,

We are proud to present to you the next NI update: Retaliation mode!

What is Retaliation mode?
On the 5th of April 2012 cavalry mode was removed from the game. This allowed for further development of the mod to go ahead, pathing the way for new game modes to be implemented, new maps to be created & a new player base to form. Meanwhile, the Swadian High Command has secretly been breeding horses away from the hungry soldiers. To date, 'Operation Lasagne' has been kept top-secret and it's existence only made known to a select few. A bountiful autumn harvest has led the High Command to believe that it is safe to reintroduce soldiers to their four legged friends without fear of the soldiers devouring them!

What is different this time?
The Dev team have gone back to the drawing board completely with cavalry. Instead of being implemented back into the current game it now has its own mode 'retaliation'. This allows us to control what happens a lot more easily without affecting the other parts of the mod.

We have also changed how lances work; they can only be couched now. All stab based polearms over a length of 150 and swinging polearms over a length of 160 are completely unusable on horseback.

All classes have been accounted for on the new mode. You will find that both horse archery and crossbows are much harder to use on horseback; this is intentional.

The new website
The website has been updated to show a 'normal' load-out and a 'Cavalry' load-out these are independent of each other. This means that the cavalry mode equipment will not pull through on the non-cav modes and vice-versa.

Completely new mode
- Tonnes of new and unique bots (we've tried to put in as many donator and otherwise suggested bots as we can).
- Unique wave difficulty scaling!
- 3 New Retaliation only maps (1 is a blast from the past).
- New shrine like prop which respawns your beloved horse.
- Horse trough is back and fully functional.

New Retaliation mode equipment
- 36 New thoroughbred horses introduced into the game.
- Completely rebalanced native horses
- Lances are back! (couchable only)

Classes & Horses
For the reintroduction of Cavalry we thought long and hard about how the balance them so your characters specific class choice will get the most out of the horse. After some deliberation it was decided that rather then applying a blanket choice of horses they would be class dependent.

We now have tiers of horses starting at tier 1 and going up to the max of tier 7. Every horse has been designated a class to cater to your every need.

The new loot
As always there wouldn't be a new mode without some new special loot! We currently have a plethora of items which haven't been seen in-game, just waiting to be grasped from the bosses' hands!

FAQ
-Q Why does my barricade not work in cav mode?
-A Barricades will not work on the cavalry server because we decided from an early point in development that we did not want this to be another shield wall mode. The whole point of this mode is to enjoy the thrill of couching enemies while just missing their incoming lances.

-Q Will my horse work on normal modes
-A No, but if you do work out how to do it then there will be an interesting surprise coming your way!

-Q How does difficulty scaling work in this mode?
-A All three previous modes difficulties have been culminated into one, for the first couple of waves they are comparable to normal mode, as the waves increase as does the difficulty. By wave 8-9 we aimed for that to be the start of 'hard mode'. By wave 13 it's Ragnarok time!

-Q Are there any secret updates to come with this?
-A There may be a couple!

-Q Why are there only EU cav servers just now?
-A This is unfortunately purely financial but will hopefully change soon

-Q Why haven't you fixed/changed/added X, Y or Z in this patch?
-A This patch has almost entirely been focused on the new game mode. There's a huge list of changes, fixes and additions that will be made in future patches.

-Q Why is this still Warband 1.153?
-A Unfortunately the new WSE has not yet been released but we cross our fingers every day! Hopefully it will be released soon...

-Q What will happen to all the horses currently in the game?
-A All horses that are currently in the game will stay in the game as a thank you to all of the veterans of NI.

-Q How do I get a horse?
-A Horses can be obtained in a multitude of ways. You can buy them from the marketplace, Craft them via the crafting professions, club together and conjure up a stallion with house crafting or even be lucky enough to get one as a drop!

General Additions & Changes:
- Cade proximity damage now scales with modes
- New admin tools! - A post will be made shortly about this on the Admin board.
- Some slight balancing of items (not much, we aim to completely overhaul soon™)
- Super secret stuff we may have forgotten about...
- New maps added (we have 37 now!) including Orik's Scene Contest winner
- 3 starting maps for Retaliation mode, one map comes a bit later. (One very first mod map added back, find out what it is !)
- New scene props
- Massive changes to the website with a few goodies on the way  Wink
- Minor changes to bot AI
- New legendary loot drops throughout all four game types
- Moar rangers!
- Caltrops!

I would like to remind players as a final note that Worm and I removed cavalry from NordInvasion for a multitude of reasons, all of which are still very fresh in my memory. While hundreds of hours have been spent on trying to balance cavalry mode, if I for a second believe that players are going out of their way to glitch or exploit this game-mode then it will be retracted. As always, we are engaged in war with Warband AI so please, do not make us feel that we have misplaced our trust in you.
